The firm's history dates to 1975. That year, Tim Scanlon left Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, then Akron's largest law firm, to open his own firm.
Tim's new firm was first located in the newly opened Quaker Square. It soon moved to the First National Tower. Buck Gearinger, Tim's friend and colleague from Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, joined him in 1979. Scanlon & Gearinger Company, L.P.A. was formed.
The firm has since been a pillar of Akron's legal community. Tim and Buck excelled at hiring skilled and ethical lawyers to staff the firm. By 1988, their firm had grown to 6 lawyers. It now has 8 lawyers and a staff of 13 skilled and devoted paralegals, secretaries, and administrative personnel.
Both Tim and Buck served terms as president of the Akron Bar Association. The firm's lawyers have led and served countless professional organizations, charities, and community interest groups. The firm has litigated numerous landmark cases and issues. It was the first firm to litigate to a successful verdict against General Motors for the "window shade" design of automobile seatbelts. It has shaped and defined Ohio tort and insurance law with numerous cases before Ohio's Supreme Court. The firm's lawyers account for several of the largest jury trial verdicts in the history of Summit County.
The firm's attorneys frequently speak at local universities and law schools, at continuing education seminars for lawyers, and at the Ohio Judicial College. Three of the firm's lawyers have served terms as president of the Summit County Trial Lawyer's Association. In recent years, Tim and Buck have each been honored with the Akron Bar Association's Professionalism Award, for their lifetime of integrity and service in the law. The firm they founded continues to serve in that tradition.
In 2004, the firm left its offices in First National Tower, after 25 years in that location. It opened beautiful offices in the Akron Centre, in renovated space previously occupied by the Akron City Club. The new location represents a fresh start for the firm, but Scanlon & Gearinger's compassionate and ethical style of representing its clients remains the same.
